The politics of being a “good girl” in business

Running a business can be a lot of fun. It can also be bloody hard, and some days you’re thrown curveballs that stop you in your tracks.

I had a day like that this week.

I went to a meeting recently – the kind of meeting where you have to be louder than you’d like to make simple points because the gaps left for your opinions are short and few. Towards the end of the meeting I made a point that a man quite liked. He seemed to think I was, in fact, someone who knew what I was doing.

Why it’s important to unplug sometimes

I recently went on a two-week holiday to Thailand and Cambodia, which was pretty magical. Before I left, one of the things I was most looking forward to (besides the white-sand beaches, daily massages and sunset cocktails – I know, I don’t like me very much either right now) was unplugging. Not checking email, or even Facebook (I know).

I set my out-of-office, and, in a moment that should have had a soundtrack of trumpets, deactivated my work email on my phone. And just like that, before I’d even stepped on the plane, I was on holiday.READ MORE
