Pomegranite - Phepha uFunde

Phepha uFunde

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, school leaders are navigating administrative and educational challenges never before experienced. Phepha uFunde – meaning “learn and be safe” in isiZulu – was established to offer solutions to these unanticipated challenges, thereby helping teachers, learners and parents to cope and thrive.

Tasked with building a clear, compact and easy to use site in partnership with Grounded Media, we kept the focus on ensuring easily accessible podcasts from the Phepha uFunde radio campaign and their valuable resources to assist and upskill school leaders in dealing with education disruptions during this challenging period.

PRD for Africa

PRD for Africa

PRD for Africa promotes policy research and dialogue for Africa’s economic transformation and prosperity. They believe that policy capability and productive collaborations are a cornerstone for successful economic transformation in Africa.

Headed by Professor Arkebe Oqubay, Senior Minister and Special Adviser to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, PRD for Africa’s mission is to support public and private sectors transform African economies through evidence-based policy research and productive dialogue, and collaborative networks and partnerships.

They required a brand new website to showcase their work as an organisation, as well as to highlight the path-breaking books and papers authored by Professor Oqubay.

Upon completion of the website, Pomegranite trained the full team in Ethiopia via video conference to empower them to manage their website going forward. We also look forward to a continued relationship of support and collaboration.

Sustainability Starts with Teachers Course

Sustainability Starts with Teachers Course

The Sustainability Starts with Teachers Course is for teacher educators and TVET educators. The focus is on an action-oriented approach to transformative learning in teacher education and TVET institutions. The UNESCO-led capacity building programme encourages teacher educators and TVET educators to put transformative education and learning towards sustainable development at the centre of their educational work.

This online course was a follow-on from the website we built for the programme. It was developed in close collaboration with the team at Rhodes University’s Environmental Learning Research Centre. The course follows a five-step action learning programme framework. The visual link to the existing site came through with the banners design by Flo Creative. The course also features a data free version, powered by biNu, which allows users without data on their mobiles to access the course.

In our client’s words:

“Pomegranite is a wonderful, professional team with innovative ideas always focused on the customer’s individual needs. The Sustainability Starts with Teachers Site is well built, with a sound LMS system in place that is not only eye catching, but works great on all types of devices. As the course content developer it was a pleasure to work with the Pomegranite team. They really listened to what I envisioned and provided continuous professional technical support during the development, launch and duration of the Online Course.” – Dr. W van Staden, ELRC, Rhodes University

Sustainability Starts with Teachers

Sustainability Starts with Teachers

Sustainability Starts with Teachers is a UNESCO-led capacity building programme for teacher educators on Education for Sustainable Development in Southern Africa. It aims to strengthen Education for Sustainable Development and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in teacher education institutions for teachers and educators from Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), primary, secondary and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The programme is implemented in partnership with Rhodes University’s Environmental Learning Research Centre.

The website we developed for the programme contains resources for teacher educators, news, stories of change and an alumni forum. A hallmark of the site is the banners that were designed by Flo Creative, which give its unique look and feel. The website also features a data free version, powered by biNu, which allows users without data on their mobiles to access the site. Following the site’s launch, we were tasked with creating an accompanying online course for the programme as well.

TAU Fellowships

TAU Fellowships

The TAU Fellowships Programme seeks to build a cadre of teaching fellows in a wide range of disciplines over a 19-month programme, involving block week contact sessions, individual projects in own teaching and learning settings, group projects and reflective reports. Participants are drawn from all South African universities.

We had originally built a section for this project on it’s affiliate website, HELTASA, but over time it grew enough to warrant its own space. The TAU site houses all the valuable resources from its two previous cycles (2015 – 2016 and 2018 – 2019), as well as information for its next cycle, which is planned for 2021.

In our client’s words:

“It’s been great working with Pomegranite. The team has been very professional, efficient and affordable. Excellent turn around time, the work is always done before the deadline – this is commendable. They are also good in offering assistance that is within their reach. Keep up the good work.” – Hellen Ochuot, Project Admistrator at TAU Fellowships

Clubfoot Africa Conference

Clubfoot Africa Conference

An initiative by STEPS, the Clubfoot Africa Conference is an event that brings together global clubfoot experts and colleagues biennially in Africa, with the vision that every child born in the continent with clubfoot is treated early and effectively. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the inaugural event in Cape Town, South Africa has been postponed to November 18 and 19, 2021.

Having created and managed STEPS’ own website, we were tasked with creating a new standalone website for the Conference that would showcase its programme of incredible speakers, as well as handle registrations.

Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision

Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision is a course created by educators at South African universities and shared with institutions locally and around the world. The project required rebuilding an old website with updated content and a revamp of the look and feel to be in line with sibling projects, Enhancing Postgraduate Environments and Creating Postgraduate Collaborations. We created the design for all three sites as well as a pop-up which alerted users on their first visit to any of the sites.

Creating Postgraduate Collaborations

Creating Postgraduate Collaborations

Creating Postgraduate Collaborations seeks to foster the development of research-rich environments in which academics and postgraduate students can thrive. This project required a synchronous online course to bring together all nine universities across five countries after we all met for a launch meeting in Istanbul in February 2020. With the spread of COVID-19 shortly afterward, this course became a central tool in the running of the project virtually, as opposed to the summer schools which had been planned in various countries.

It has been a pleasure to also work on sibling projects Enhancing Postgraduate Environments and Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision.

In our client’s words:

“The CPC course was a huge success. You guys are instantly responsive, creative, enthusiastic and make things happen. You also tackle our stupid questions with tolerance and humour. You’re the best!” –  Sioux McKenna, Creating Postgraduate Collaborations

AcWriMo@RU is an Academic Writing Month run through Rhodes University. Twice a year, members commit to an audacious writing goal and support each other in developing productive writing habits over the period of a month through the setting of goals and synchronous writing sessions.

Crossroads School

Founded in 1966, Crossroads School has established its roots with an in-depth understanding of children faced with learning challenges. This Johannesburg based school’s motto, “Let None Be Left Behind”, epitomises the way they teach and encapsulates their all-encompassing approach to remedial education.

We were tasked with creating a slick new website for this school, with a focus on showcasing the encouraging and nurturing environment which Crossroads School provides for each learner and changing perceptions of remediation through education. We streamlined the site and created a simple user experience – for current and future learners’ parents – with easy access to resources and other important information.
