Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision

Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision is a course created by educators at South African universities and shared with institutions locally and around the world. The project required rebuilding an old website with updated content and a revamp of the look and feel to be in line with sibling projects, Enhancing Postgraduate Environments and Creating Postgraduate Collaborations. We created the design for all three sites as well as a pop-up which alerted users on their first visit to any of the sites.

Creating Postgraduate Collaborations

Creating Postgraduate Collaborations

Creating Postgraduate Collaborations seeks to foster the development of research-rich environments in which academics and postgraduate students can thrive. This project required a synchronous online course to bring together all nine universities across five countries after we all met for a launch meeting in Istanbul in February 2020. With the spread of COVID-19 shortly afterward, this course became a central tool in the running of the project virtually, as opposed to the summer schools which had been planned in various countries.

It has been a pleasure to also work on sibling projects Enhancing Postgraduate Environments and Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision.

In our client’s words:

“The CPC course was a huge success. You guys are instantly responsive, creative, enthusiastic and make things happen. You also tackle our stupid questions with tolerance and humour. You’re the best!”

AcWriMo@RU

AcWriMo@RU

AcWriMo@RU is an Academic Writing Month run through Rhodes University. Twice a year, members commit to an audacious writing goal and support each other in developing productive writing habits over the period of a month through the setting of goals and synchronous writing sessions.

We built a site to bring this writing community together, motivating them to achieve their writing goals, with badges and certificates awarded as they achieve their goals. We also created a platform to facilitate synchronous writing sessions and forums to share valuable writing insights.

In our client’s words:

“We are really happy with our AcWriMo@RU community website, it’s fun and creative and has been really successful in bringing people together to achieve their writing goals. The Pomegranite team has been so patient and determined to find solutions to our technical requests.” – Sioux McKenna, AcWriMo@RU

WageWise Pomegranite Website Development

WageWise

WageWise, an ASISA Foundation financial literacy initiative, teaches users financial literacy skills such as budgeting, understanding payslips, saving, planning for retirement and financial products and services to help plan for the future.

We built a platform to assist in the transfer of knowledge and skills development to South Africa’s most vulnerable groups. This website is simple and easy to navigate, empowering users to manage their finances effectively. The site provides valuable templates for personal use and includes infographics for easy understanding of what can often be tricky calculations.

In our client’s words:

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and the team for the fantastic website. We are really happy with it and the client loves it and is getting lots of positive feedback. I know there were a lot of tiny tweaks so thanks very much for your patience and willingness to get things sorted out quickly. Thanks again!”

Crossroads School

Founded in 1966, Crossroads School has established its roots with an in-depth understanding of children faced with learning challenges. This Johannesburg based school’s motto, “Let None Be Left Behind”, epitomises the way they teach and encapsulates their all-encompassing approach to remedial education.

We were tasked with creating a slick new website for this school, with a focus on showcasing the encouraging and nurturing environment which Crossroads School provides for each learner and changing perceptions of remediation through education. We streamlined the site and created a simple user experience – for current and future learners’ parents – with easy access to resources and other important information.

Narratives of Home and Neighbourhood

Narratives of Home and Neighbourhood

The Narratives of Home and Neighbourhood project examines how state housing models shape the social landscape of South Africa, using the city of Durban as its case study. The research focuses on the perspectives of the people who live in state housing units, providing a much-needed qualitative micro-level focus in a field that has existing rich literature on the macro economic and social debates around housing.

The team behind the project wanted a website that showcased their findings, containing both the individual reports and photo series from each area in the study. The site also includes an interactive map from Open Data Durban, which highlights the findings from each of the project’s locations in a user friendly format.

One Ocean Hub background graphic

One Ocean Hub

One Ocean Hub is an independent programme for collaborative research for development, funded by UK Research and Innovation through the Global Challenges Research Fund. It aims to transform our response to the urgent challenges facing our ocean. Its research seeks to bridge current disconnections in law, science and policy and integrate governance frameworks to balance multiple ocean uses with conservation. It strives to empower the communities, women and children, most reliant upon the oceans to inform decisions based on multiple values and knowledge systems.

We were tasked with building a website for the Hub that would showcase their research into the different challenges and opportunities facing the various focus territories, which include Ghana, Namibia, the Pacific Islands and South Africa. The design was the product of a collaborative effort, which included workshops with representatives from the 22 international universities and research centres that make up the Hub. The site will continue to grow as findings get released.

During November 2018, the Open Society Foundation celebrated 25 years of grant-making in South Africa. The organisation also paid tribute to founder, George Soros, who visited South Africa, along with other OSF international network partners. The celebration was special because his philanthropy was born in South Africa, with the issuing for scholarships for black students to attend UCT in 1979.

Pomegranite built a dedicated website which housed a range of information including a special timeline which displayed archive material from OSF-SA’s 25 years in South Africa, along with tributes to George Soros, special films, press releases and event information.

We also managed several social media campaigns related to the week of celebrations and live-tweeted major events. We were delighted that “#OpenSocietySA25” trended in Cape Town during the celebrations.

The Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust

A hospital dedicated entirely to children – especially children predominantly from impoverished communities throughout Africa – is critically important. So important, that it needs a champion to make sure that it’s able to keep doing the phenomenal work it does.

That champion is the Children’s Hospital Trust.

The Trust was established in 1994 to advance child healthcare through the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital – the first stand-alone tertiary hospital, exclusively for children, in sub-Saharan Africa.

Building this website and helping rewrite the content meant hearing stories about kids beating the odds and incredible people saving lives. Naturally, we loved it.

In our client’s words:

“Thanks so much for hitting the nail right on the head first time! I must say to get such great, positive feedback from everyone really is a first. “

Get Checked Go Collect Website Development Pomegranite Online Presence Consultancy

Get Checked Go Collect

Millions of South Africans have chronic conditions, whether that’s diabetes, high blood pressure or HIV. Get Checked Go Collect is a campaign that aims to motivate people to stay on their medication and reward those who do, with a convenient service that allows them to collect their medication at convenient collection points.

In collaboration with Grounded Media, we built a website that allows people to find out more about the most common chronic conditions, why it’s so important to get checked and how their free and convenient collection service can help people to manage their conditions more easily.
