How do you communicate a lot of fundamental information in a visually appealing way?
ReNOKA, meaning ‘we are a river’ in the local Sesotho language, is a national programme and active citizen movement aiming to engage, unify and inspire all communities living and working within the Orange-Senqu River Basin to act together to protect and restore land and water for the shared prosperity of the basin and its people.
For us, a website’s content (visual and text) guides the design process. This website redesign was a thing of beauty, from the powerful imagery of the river basin and community members, to the impactful stories featured, it was such a treat for us to engage with the content and map out what we envisioned for the site.
The Orange-Senqu River is a crucial natural resource for Southern Africa, directly impacting 15 million people who rely on it for water, farming and hydro power. An important consideration throughout the design process was how we would communicate a lot of important information in a visually appealing way. The strong image bank was an excellent tool in splitting up content, as well as text overlays and animations.
As we worked closely with the ReNOKA team, it emerged that, while the website deftly communicates the facts of the project, it still felt like something was missing. They spoke passionately about how this project takes a different approach, how the thread of those values are woven into every aspect of the work – so we decided to tell that story. It now lives in prominence on the navigation as well as in calls to action throughout the site.
One of our favourite things to do is map out the architecture of and build resource libraries, and ReNOKA’s Learning Laboratory was no exception. Users can easily browse and search their multi-media library, while ReNOKA team members are able to manage the expanding library on a day-to-day basis without needing extensive technical knowledge to do so.
