All along there was some invisible string tying you to me
When we transitioned to working remotely, for the most part, we were quite conscious about finding tangible ways to weave the things we loved from our office culture into an online space so that we still felt connected. For example, we bookend the week with team meetings, sharing recommendations of movies, series and books we’ve enjoyed, and our highs and lows of the week. Each team member also has a one-on-one check-in every week.
But one of our favourite connective threads are our Slack channels. These aren’t all work-related. There’s one for skin care, and another for reading recs, for example. The place where you’ll find the most joy, though, is “good-vibes”.
🥳 “We’ve just been shortlisted for another big project! Interview tomorrow morning.”
💛 After a client meeting: “They’re so lovely🙂 Their work is really interesting and the way they approach it makes me happy every time.”
📝 “I’ve just signed the contract with MSF and want to take a small moment to enjoy it. What a dream come true. MSF are officially a Pomegranite client!”
✉️ “From a client: I keep sending you emails as things come to mind that need to be done – I don’t add it to a to-do-list or track it because I know you guys are so organised you will manage it for me and get it done.”
It goes without saying that the GIF game in this channel is fairly strong.
One message from a client that was shared with the team recently really stood out to me, though.
It said: “Thank you for all your kindness… I really appreciate you.”
I’ve thought about this a lot lately, particularly in the light of recent global events, when so much feels beyond your control and it can be hard to know where to focus your energy to create something positive.
Yes, you can make an impact by building a beautiful website that supports an organisation’s work on the ground and extends their reach. It’s something that brings us enormous satisfaction and is the core of what we do. But you can also make an impact on someone’s day – someone’s life – by being kind.
In an Instagram post following the US elections, writer, Jess Janz, said, “… in rebuttal to the… state of How Things Are, every single gesture of softness becomes a revolution: the meals we make for each other and the baby we smile at on the bus and every song we send with a text saying hey this made me think of you and the trans flag that someone places in the corner of the window of the bakery to let our friends know that they’re safe here… and every time we ask ourselves what small, miniscule kind thing could I do for someone else, and then go do that thing. With each of these actions, we create a different world.
It all means nothing. It is the only thing that counts.”
I love that our project manager, Jesse, was sent that client message. I love that our operations manager, Melissa, shared it with us all, because she knew it was something worth noticing.
Pomegranite has never been keen on winning awards. We’ve never entered any industry competitions. It’s never seemed important to us. But messages like this? This is what it’s all about, really. Human connection has never felt more important – whether it’s a message of acknowledgement or enthusiastic agreement in a team meeting that Dylan from this season’s Great British Bake-Off is our project manager Rowan’s doppelganger (the hair, the hats, the earnestness, the earrings, the laugh – we could go on).
So, as the year draws to a close and we all start the deep December exhale, we want to say: thank you.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Thank you for the inspiring work you bring to us.
Thank you for sending the people in your network our way.
Thank you for the humanness of all our interactions.
Thank you for your kindness.
We really appreciate you.
Have a wonderful, restful break, and we look forward to the ways, big and small, we can change the world together in 2025.
