Over the past two weeks it feels like the whole of Cape Town has come down with the nastiest cold – our Twitter feed is full of adults talking about how much they want their moms. Liz (currently in bed herself) has even nicknamed the virus the ‘black lung’.

Offices are the perfect place for germs to lurk. We eat food at our desks, our keyboards probably aren’t as clean as they should be and there’s almost always that one person who’s practically dead but refuses to go home. Because we want everyone to be happy and healthy this is our flu season 2017 public health announcement.

“Did you wash your hands?”

A recent global study has found that only one in twenty people properly wash their hands. Be honest with yourself: do you really wash your hands before and after you eat lunch at your desk?

Invest in one of those cute hand sanitizer bottles to have on your desk. You can keep it right next to your Viral Choice.

Your body is a temple

Our bodies are incredibly intricate systems so dosing up on Berocca but not getting enough sleep or exercise won’t help your immune system in the long run. Make sure your body gets enough immune-boosting foods like citrus, antioxidant rich berries, onion and garlic and try go to bed at 10pm.

Turmeric time

If you’re starting to feel sniffly, make something hot to drink with Turmeric in it.

Turmeric, especially its chemical compound curcumin, contains powerful antiviral and antibacterial properties. It also contains potassium and manganese that support your immune system.

Our office favourite per cup:

  • ¼ teaspoon of dry turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon of dry ginger
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Honey to taste

*P.S. Don’t drink the sandiness at the bottom of your mug – it’s not nice.

Go home

This one is really important. Don’t be the person who sits and their desk coughing, excessively blowing their nose and not really doing any work. If you’re not adding value to your team rather climb into bed, rest up and return a rock star.
