Revamp or rebuild

Revamp or rebuild? Our take on the best approach to a website refresh

By Liz

Clients often come to us wanting to update their website and are unsure whether they want to revamp or ‘reskin’ the site (i.e. use the current theme and structure and replace text and images), or whether they want to rebuild the site (build the site afresh on a clean WordPress install with a new theme, look and feel).

We understand that resources (your budget, time and energy) matter, and the idea of “just updating what’s there” can sound more efficient, however, having worked in both scenarios and reflected on those experiences in our project debriefs, the overwhelming consensus is that a website rebuild gives you far greater value, stability, and future-readiness than trying to edit, or rework a legacy website.

If you thought a revamp would be your first choice, you’re not alone. We also used to think it would be quicker and easier, but understanding the technical reasoning, hidden risks and better results have changed that perception permanently.

Why does a revamp seem desirable? There are several cognitive biases already at play in this decision such as:

1. Sunk cost fallacy e.g. “We spent money building this website five years ago — surely we can just tweak it.”

2. Status quo bias e.g. “We know it could be much better, but at least I know what I’m working with.”

3. Short-term bias e.g. “Let’s just fix the worst bits for now—we’ll think about the rest later.”

These biases can make a website rebuild seem like too much to ask. In our experience, however, a full rebuild results in a better website and a better experience for the client. It’s worth doing it properly. Here’s why:

1. A clean slate for your next chapter

Legacy websites carry years of outdated content, accumulated fixes, outdated plugins, and haphazard design choices that no longer serve your goals. Revamping a site like this is like fixing a leaky roof—it might hold for a while, but underlying issues still remain.

Rebuilding allows us to align all aspects of your website with your current mission and audience, ensuring that every element supports your objectives.

2. Enhanced performance and security

On the technical front, older sites can be bloated, sluggish and vulnerable due to outdated content, code and unsupported plugins. A rebuild ensures that your site is fast, responsive, and secure, providing a better experience for your visitors and peace of mind for you.

3. Simplified content management

Managing content on an old site can be cumbersome, especially if it’s been modified by multiple hands over the years. A fresh build offers a considered and streamlined backend, making it easier for your team to update and manage content.

Aside from the ease of use and renewed focus, critically assessing content is critical for effective user experience and strong SEO.

4. Cost-effective in the long term

We have no idea what state your website’s foundations, plugins and code are in until we have access to the back-end, which often isn’t possible at the quoting stage. For this reason, if we do a revamp, we have to conduct an audit and make the necessary updates (which may be significant) before we move ahead with any content updates.

A rebuild allows for more predictable and stable costing because we have a fresh foundation – there are no skeletons in the closet. The project itself runs more smoothly because we are not beholden to outdated tools and builders, which means a quicker and cleaner process. It also results in lower upkeep costs and fewer headaches down the line.

5. Future-ready design

On a practical level, we build new websites with future efficiency in mind. We design, create and save repeated design elements so that they can be reused almost instantly down the line, saving time and money later.

More broadly, however, your website is your organisation’s first touchpoint for your target audience and user expectations are evolving rapidly. Rebuilding your site ensures it’s adaptable to future needs, whether that’s integrating new tools or expanding functionality.

If your organisation has a vision for growth, values security and performance and wants to make the most out of its resources, a website rebuild is our strong recommendation.
